A question I’m often asked is, “Do “calories” really count?”

I want to say yes, but it’s not that simple. Calories aren’t the only thing that matter when it comes to how much you weigh and the amount of energy you have. It’s all about your metabolism. Which is a bit more complicated than calories in and calories burned.

Metabolism is the process of taking in oxygen and food and using them for energy, heat, and storage. But what’s more important is how fast your metabolism works, which is often referred to as your “metabolic rate.” And you may have heard of RMR and TDEE, which are ways to measure your metabolic rate.

What you really want to know is what affects your metabolic rate, and how can you use that to your advantage. It’s not just about how much you eat. It’s about your hormones, body composition, and of course, what you eat.

There are so many diets what works and motivates?  There are so many gimmicks about this berry or that that claim to be the answer.  It is pathetic.  The weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar industry.  At IMS Supplements, Inc.  we receive telephone calls about this pill or that and people want the truth.  The truth is there is no magic bullet or pill when it comes to weight loss.  The only thing lighter after watching some program or advertisement is your pocket book.

The truth is that we are hungry due to all the empty calories that we are consuming in processed foods.  I never was one to recommend multi-vitamins but it appears despite alleged vitamin fortification in this and that in the grocery store we may be getting short changed when we are shopping in the produce section.  The vitamins and minerals in produce come from the soil.  When the soil is over farmed and simply replanted after every crop without rest the amount of nutrients become reduced.  More and more people are gravitating towards USDA organic products and non-GMO and this is obviously the best place to start.

After the first step you need motivation.  Well what motivates you?  For many of us it is as simple as looking in the mirror.  Next it is about education.  There are multiple ways to educate yourself.  The easiest is to search out video programming on the internet.  Even Netflix® has some great documentaries.  Well you may ask – what are they?

Losing Weight – Get help through Apps

The goal of losing weight is in most peoples minds and goals.  The purpose of this article is to alert you that there are a few apps (applications) that are now available that seem to fit the bill in achieving your goals.

The first app is called MyFitnessPal  which tracks both calories and fitness.  From the MyFitnessPal website:  “Over 40 million people have lost weight with MyFitnessPal’s FREE calorie counter  Get access to the world’s largest nutrition and calorie database — over 3 million foods!”    Well I have tried this app and it’s great.  Many times you can just scan the barcode of the product and enter the number of servings.  This is also great when you are preparing foods at home, an example a recipe.  For home-cooked meals, there’s an option to create (and save) a recipe by plugging in the individual ingredients. Besides whole and natural ingredients, the MyFitnessPal app includes things like prepackaged supermarket products and chain restaurant favorites.  Look for the “MyFitnessPal” in the app store on your smart phone or tablet including Kindle tablets.   The other beauty of this app is that it allows you to track your activity level which is important to losing weight.

After trying numerous apps to find a food diary app the MyFitnessPal is the winner.

Another unique app is brought to the world by MINDIFI.  I have tried the “Weight Loss Hypnosis” app and believe it or not I am quit impressed. This app is available for Apple, Kindle, and Android products through the respective app stores.  The following product description is from the manufacturer:
